Airbrush Color Changers.
By Ron Gress
In 1979 I was working at paramount pictures when I was asked to join the “Startrek, the Motion Picture” team as the painter in the model shop where the Enterprise and all the miniatures were being built. The Enterprise had a very complex paint design which required several airbrushes and over 30 separate bottles of acrylic lacquer automotive paint. Over the 6 months I worked on the miniatures I found myself thinking how great it would be to have an airbrush that contained all of the colors I needed. One of my fellow workers said” you figure that one out and you’ll be a millionaire. I took up the challenge.
Some of the problems I had were the leaking of paint from the bottle vents and the constant changing of bottles and drying out of the paint. I knew I needed a sealed and pressurized system. I had access to all of the parts and machines I needed in my shop at home and soon had a working model of what became the “Chameleon” color changer. I consulted a patent attorney and soon was the proud owner of U.S Patent# 4,508,271. Binks Manufacturing was granted the world wide rights to build and distribute the device. I maintained ownership of the patent.
When Binks was taken over by another company I retained the rights to the “Chameleon” and was approached by Silenaire of Houston, Texas to team up with them and continue building color changers. We redesigned the Chameleon and Silentaire soon patented the “Spectrum 2000” color changer. U.S. Patent# 6,527,201 B2 which was introduced in the year 2000 and remains the only “patented” color changer on the market.
There have been several other attempts to market color changers over the years but none have matched the quality and usability of either the Chameleon or the Spectrum 2000
